our history
Tearwallet Baptist Church was organized in 1872, evolving from Tarwallet Baptist Church. Until a building could be erected, service was held under a brush arbor.
Reverend John W. White and his assistant, Reverend Josiah Evans, were the spiritual leaders in helping to organize and erect the first church, a log building. In 1885, God saw fit to call Reverend White. Later, Reverend John W. Henderson was elected pastor, and assisted by Reverend John Bolling. Under Reverend Henderson's leadership, a frame building was erected. He served faithfully until God called him home to rest in 1905.
Reverend Shelton A. Anderson was elected pastor during the same year of 1905. He was a good spiritual leader. He led his people to build a larger edifice, and in 1930, the church moved to the present site. During this pastorate, the church grew spiritually. The following auxiliaries were organized: the Sunday School, the Senior Choir under the direction of the late Mrs. Janie Johnson, the Fireside Club under the late Mrs. Louise Webster, and the Usher Board under the direction of Mrs. Christine Blanton. Reverend Anderson served faithfully for 40 years. In 1945, when his health began to fail, he resigned with a request that the church get a man no smaller than he.
In 1946, Reverend Orzie C. Perkins was elected as pastor. A native of Cumberland County, he was outstanding as a spiritual leader. He served for six years, and made many effective changes in the reorganization of the church. In 1952, Reverend Perkins resigned to accept a church in Homestead, Pennsylvania.
In 1953, Reverend Leslie Francis Griffin was elected as pastor. He was installed on the fourth Sunday in November 1954. Under his leadership, the church continued to grow spiritually and financially. Modern conveniences were installed. On the morning of February 1, 1957, our church was destroyed by fire. Ground was broken for a new building on July 18, 1957. Work began a few days later with Mr. Kennel A. Jackson, Sr., as contractor.
Our present building was completed and the first service held on Sunday, March 23, 1958. Cornerstone Laying Service was held on June 22, 1958. The Dedication service was held on August 24, 1958. During this time, Reverend Griffin was an ideal leader and served unselfishly until God said, "Well done", in January 1980.
Reverend Paul Wilson was elected and installed in October 1981. He remained pastor until he resigned in December, 1993.
Reverend Douglas Harris was elected pastor and installed in December 22, 1996. He remained pastor until March 1998, when he resigned due to failing health.
Reverend Sandy Carrington was installed as pastor on April 24, 1999. He is still presently serving the Lord at this church. Reverend Orville Lewis became associate minister of Tearwallet in March 2012 and served until 2014. Deacon Van Petty, Sr. was licensed by the church and became an associate minister in December 2013. Reverend Ernest Nash became an associate minister in 2016. Minister Petty was ordained and became Reverend Petty in April 2017.
On July 8, 2012, the Cornerstone Service was held for the dedication of the new fellowship hall, which includes the baptismal pool.
For years this church has stood as a sentinel pointing men, women, boys and girls to the Heavenly way. In the midst of world problems and conflicts, in the face of strife and wars, may this church ever hold high its banner for Christ. May it always be "A Church Marching Forward Serving Each Generation through the Power of the Holy Spirit!"
